neighbourhood music

there was some live music by a jazz band in the neighbourhood today. i saw it on my way home from the grocery store so i stopped to listen. audience members were really getting into it – black people really do have rhythm. the best part was when an old black guy started doing tai read more »

pumpkin spice is back!

no that is not a new spice girl. joe’s exam marathon starts tomorrow with aramaic, and he was surprised with a venti pumpkin spice no whip frappucino, courtesy of our friend anne, who dropped it off after dinner. thanks anne!! i couldn’t help myself, and took a few sips. seriously, not more than 10 sips read more »

strange sight

while joe was busy studying today, i went for a walk by the lake. doesn’t that look strange? a very borg-like floaty thing (for all you fellow trekkies). i couldn’t stop staring at it…i was having fun playing with the optical illusion.

you are what you eat

…which i guess makes me a garbanzo bean. do you ever read the nutritional info on the side of packages when buying food? i used to be oblivious to it, but this last year i started to read them before buying. sometimes i’m surprised and grossed out, and i will actually change my mind on read more »

no bird, just a couple F-16′s. i saw them flying around during a practice for the chicago air show this past weekend. i saw one F-16 climb vertically up and up, then (it seemed like) free fall vertically down and down before levelling out again. nope, not for me…i get nauseous on a swing.

jeff wall exhibit

the art institute is featuring a special exhibit of jeff wall, a vancouver-based artist, who is especially known for his photography mounted in aluminum light boxes. it was really interesting to see his artwork in person. my favorites were After “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison, the Prologue and A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai)…the read more »

pam and scott come to town

it’s always fun getting visitors! today pam and scott spent a few hours with us in Hyde Park. this is pam pretending to be joe at his desk…”uuggh”: then we had a nice thai lunch where we got to know scott better. after a small scuffle, pam and scott won the bill and treated us read more »
